The most effective way to prepare is to consider the end goal and then backtrack from there. So you need to establish what the final question you want answered is, and then from there establish the network of questions that you believe will need to be answered in order to reach that final goal.

For instance, the Foundation of Critical Thinking suggests that if your ultimate goal is to land on an answer to the question “What is multiculturalism?” you first will need to be able to settle the questions of “What is culture?” “What is the basis of culture?” and “What are the factors about a person which determine what culture he/she belongs to?”
